The 96th edition of the Academy Award nominations has stirred up the central question of the movie season: Will it be the year of “Barbie” or “Oppenheimer”? With eight nominations for “Barbie” and 13 for “Oppenheimer,” the answer is still elusive, leading to the playful term “Barbenheimer.” As anticipated, Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” took the lead with a robust 13 nominations, closely followed by the fantasy film “Poor Things” starring Emma Stone with 11, and Martin Scorsese’s drama “Killers of the Flower Moon” securing 10 nominations. The summer blockbuster “Barbie” garnered eight nominations.
As the nominations unfolded, films like Oppenheimer, Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon, Poor Things, and The Holdovers demonstrated strength, having already secured major wins at the Critics Choice Awards and Golden Globes. These movies also enjoyed support from various guilds, including directors, actors, and producers, comprising a significant portion of the Academy‘s voting body. Amidst the strong contenders, others, such as Maestro and Past Lives, as well as animated blockbusters like The Boy and the Heron and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, were vying for recognition.
The Oscars, hosted for the fourth time by Jimmy Kimmel, are set to unfold on March 10. For Oscar Nominations 2024 List, please refer below.
